Welcome

The Wiltzius Group is focused on the fabrication and study of novel three dimensional structures with periodicities on the micron and sub micron scale. We are particularily interested in photonic crystal devices and their applications. We have done work on the fabrication of three-dimensional photonic crystals by various methods and the study of their properties. We employ computational methods both to optimize fabrication processes and photonic properties and also to design experimental techniques to create new and interesting three-dimensional structures.

Some of the current projects in our lab are:

  • Fabrication of three-dimensional silicon-air photonic crystals using multi-beam interference lithography.
  • Using Genetic Algorithms to design multi-beam interference lithography experiments.
  • Solid angle resolved spectroscopy from photonic crystals made of fluorescent materials for use in organic light emitting diodes.
  • Creating three-dimensional hydrogel structures for use as humidity sensors.
  • Fabricating novel three dimensional structures by robocaster direct drawing.
  • Using electro-deposition of semiconductor materials to fabricate high refractive index contrast photonic crystals.
